Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening, (bleaching), is a procedure that whitens the teeth using a bleaching solution.
Teeth darken for a variety of reasons:
- Coffee and tea consumption
- Smoking
- Antibiotic use
- Excessive fluoride
- The process of aging
The “at-home” technique involves use of a custom-made mouth-guard into which the bleaching agent if placed. If you decide to have your teeth bleached, an impression of your teeth is made to prepare a custom fitted tray. Within a day or two, you will receive the appliance, bleaching materials, and instructions on use for home bleaching. This approach requires wearing the tray about one hour a night, for 10 to 14 days.
The “in-office” procedure involves painting the teeth with a bleaching solution and takes about an hour. It lightens your teeth immediately. It involves an in-office bleaching system using a higher concentration of the bleaching agent while you sit in the dental chair.
What are the long-term results? Depending on your personal habits--such as smoking and drinking coffee or tea-- bleaching may produce many years without reversal. Many years of study have confirmed that bleaching is safe, effective and long lasting.
Bleaching is successful in at least 90% of patients, lasting up to five years. It can help you achieve a bright smile that can last for years .
